The port of Roses is launching an educational route in the fishing area for schoolchildren and visitors

The fishing port of Roses has been the first on the Costa Brava to have a pedagogical circuit in the fishing area, to commemorate the centenary of the Fishermen's Guild. This circuit contains 10 informative panels to make known the fishing activity, the history of the port and the marine culture, the nutritional value of the fish and, at the same time, to make the public aware of the impact that the waste has on the sea.

The Port Administration, Roses City Council and the Roses Fishermen's Guild have collaborated in the elaboration of the contents of the panels. Ports de la Generalitat has also been responsible for the design, elaboration and installation of the panels, at a cost of 15,000 euros. Part of which is funded under the European Maritime Fund for Fisheries' Community Operational Program (EMFF).

The Director General of Ports of the Generalitat, Pere Vila, the Mayor of Roses, Joan Plana, the patron saint of the Fishermen's Guild of Roses, Antoni Abad, and the member of the Girona Provincial Council, Montse Mindan, have visited this on Monday the didactic circuit that has been installed in the fishing pier of the port of Roses.

The didactic circuit

The circuit consists of 10 information panels placed along the fishing pier of Roses and outside the market building. The first panel shows a map of the port with the route directory, where each panel has a number to know the location of each panel. The historical part is made up of 3 panels, where the history of the port, the Brotherhood, the fishermen and the parts of a boat are explained. The fishing gear is in 3 panels that are distributed between trawling, encircling and minor gear. The type of fish is shown in 2 panels, one of blue fish and the other of white fish and seafood. The route ends with a sign explaining the impact of the waste on the sea.

With the aim of adapting the route to school activities, most of the panels have been made in the form of a countertop so as not to disturb the view of the port and ensure a good understanding of the groups of children who visit the fishing facilities. during the school year. 

Dissemination project

The fishing ports receive hundreds of schoolchildren and visitors each year who go to see the fish unloading and the auction room. In fact, fishing has become a tourist attraction for seafaring people. Thus, the itineraries add value to the fishing activity of Catalonia, the history and the marine culture, promote the local fish and its nutritional value, help to make the citizens aware of the impact that the waste has on the sea, and bring the ports closer to the population.

The pedagogical itineraries are part of a project of an informative nature of Ports de la Generalitat that is being carried out in the fishing ports of the Catalan coast, with the aim of promoting and highlighting fishing activity. The initiative has the support of fishermen's guilds and town councils in researching historical and graphic content, as well as locating the most appropriate port spaces to locate the panels.
