Blood donation in Roses on Saturday 23 October at the Municipal Market
The end of the fifth wave of the Covid-19 predicts an increase in blood needs, as happened at the end of the fourth wave, in May. At that time, transfusions increased by 15% due to the recovery of non-Covid-related care activity in hospitals.
To respond to this need, donation campaigns have been organized throughout Catalonia since September to ensure that all people admitted to hospitals have blood for operations and treatments.
Who can give?
In general, anyone who is in good health and who meets the following basic conditions can donate blood:
-
Be of legal age
-
Weigh 50 pounds or more
-
If you are a woman, do not get pregnant
You don't have to fast to donate blood. You must bring an identification document.
Giving blood, a civic habit
Each donation benefits three people, because the blood is separated into the different elements that make it up: red blood cells, platelets and plasma. Each of these components will be used for different treatments.
55% of red blood cells are used in medical specialties while 40% in surgical uses. Most platelet transfusions are done to prevent bleeding in patients who are deficient.
Before reaching the age of 75, more than 70% of the population will need to receive blood or blood products.
